When we first moved to California over a year ago, our new home came with a water softener system. Having lived in the Midwest previously where it is normal to experience hard water, I never had the opportunity to use a water softener. In fact, I never knew there was a difference. But this past year with our water softener system has been a game changer in how I view my household water.
What is Hard Water?
Have you ever noticed you have spotty dishes, buildup on your shower, soap that doesn’t lather or rinse well, or clothing, skin, and hair that feels stiff after washing? These are all signs of hard water.
Hard water is caused by certain “hardness” materials—like magnesium and calcium— that’s in your homes water supply. Hard water can cause many issues in your home like clogging pipes, damaging your appliances, and creating health issues.

What is a Water Softener?
Water softeners remove the “hardness” minerals from your water supply through the process of reverse osmosis or ion exchange. As the hard water enters the water softener system filters, the calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions. Sodium—or salt—is very soluble, unlike calcium and magnesium, and can condition your water and won’t leave deposit lime scale or scum like untreated hard water can.
Benefits of Water Softening
There are many reasons to soften your water. From reducing the amount of soap you need to clean your clothes, to fewer stains on your bath and kitchen surfaces, soft water saves you time, money, and helps you look and feel your best.
Benefits of Using Morton Water Softening Salt
Easy to Use. I picked up a bag of Morton Water Softening Salt with a free coupon I received from Morton Salt for testing purposes. Morton Salt was easier to use than most brands. Being six months pregnant, I thought I would have difficulty with this product but I found opening and loading the salt into the softener was quick and easy.
Cleaning. One of the first things I noticed after using Morton Salt was the reduction in cleaning time on the bathroom taps, sinks, shower walls, tubs, and toilets. We also drastically reduced the amount of cleaning products and harsh chemicals we used too.
Savings. By eliminating the buildup of lime scale on our pipes, radiators, and water heater, it helped them to work more efficiently. This has helped us save money on heating bills and prolonged the lifespan of these units.
Health benefits. Soap, shampoo, and laundry detergents ‘lathered up’ much more than before allowing us to use less and save more. Plus, by using less soaps and shampoo, we noticed our skin and hair was much softer without needing expensive moisturizers and conditioners and helped with Eczema and Psoriasis.
Environment. Since we didn’t need to use as much soaps, detergents, and cleaning products as before, we produced far less waste water containing harmful chemicals that are bad for our environment.

My sister has a really dry scalp. It kind of sounds like it could be the water. I’ve never given it much thought before since I’m always traveling but maybe it would be a good idea to have our water treated.
I didn’t realize that hard water required more soap to clean clothes. I have to use a little more than the recommended amount of laundry soap to get my clothes completely clean right now with my hard water. I’ll have to look into getting a water softener and see if that makes a difference!
We have a water softener in our house, and I always notice when we need to have it refilled because of the water. It’s interesting that when you used a water softener, it makes everything easier to clean. I am glad that we have this system installed, and are benefiting from it.
