Getting ready for a day hike? You have the clothing; you have the gear, but what about the snacks? To really have a positive and pleasant journey, you also need to make certain that your body is properly fueled and hydrated before, during, and after a day hike.
Hiking burns tons of calories. In fact, an average 190-pound male burns 517 calories per hour of hiking; the average 163-pound female burns 444 calories per hour of hiking. Realistically, you could burn nearly 2,000 calories on an average 4-hour day hike. Because of the sheer amount of calories you burn hiking, it is important that you refuel often.
When I first started hiking, I tried to complete day hikes without refueling. I would have great energy at the beginning of an easy to moderate hike but by the end, usually 3-4 hours later, I was crawling to the car. It wasn’t until I discovered the wonders of trail snacks that I was able to complete long hikes enjoyably, without feeling exhausted.

Chocolates are great when hiking for that fast sugar boost. Wholesome snacks that we can nibble with convenience are great and we can consider these three items. I love to have crispy and crunchy treats while climbing the mountain as well.
I just bought 2 packages of mini m&m’s because I like to put them into my home made raw nut trail mix too for a little added sweetness and crunch! So it’s funny that you posted about it when I just bought it yesterday at Target :) Guess we like the same kinda candy hehe. I haven’t tried their coconut or birthday cake flavour ones yet, have you?

Yes! I can finally snack with out feeling really guilty! I like the trail mix idea and I can see these being used on crispy treats.
I have seen the commercial for Crispy M&Ms but have never tied them. The commercials crack me up that red M&M is a total troublemaker and the yellow one is way too gullible for his own good. Sounds like a great idea for trail snacks. I live in NYC so I don’t hike, but this is a walking city and I walk everywhere and like to keep snacks in my purse as ‘delays’ be it public transportation or on the highways are always inevitable!

I did not know that trail hiking could burn so much calories. That is almost one day of the calorie I use. I am just worried that the energy boost that we get from sugar could be harmful.
My colleague is such an avid hiker. She talks a lot about refueling up for big hikes and staying hydrated during. Wholesome snacks should be a part of our daily routine as it keeps our bodies in check and the energy flowing.

I am a big fan of M&Ms and I can’t believe this snack is under 200 calories. You also had me at sweet and salty. I love snacks with a combination of salt and sugar.
These sound like fun. I am never a fan of the plain m&ms and I like the peanut but sometimes I’m just lazy and don’t feel like chewing – I know but seriously – so this are like the perfect balance. I can’t wait to go grab a bag and try them out…that is if I can hide them from my Kiddies long enough to enjoy them :D

I love mnms, but I’ve never had the crispy ones. We try to avoid a lot of sugar here, but who doesn’t have a sugar craving once in a while? I like the idea to put mnms in with popcorn. We snack on popcorn every now and again, so it would be simple to just pop in a few crispy mnms. I’ll have to grab a bag next time we’re at the store and see how the combo tastes.
