Being a mom of three, there are many things that I need to keep my kids safe. One of the things I cannot do without a good thermometer is. I have always been curious about which thermometer gives the most accurate reading. I have tried countless types of thermometers from glass and digital under-the-tongue types to temporal strips and scans. The problem that I have had with these thermometers is that after a few months of usage, they stop working.

I also was gifted an ear thermometer at my baby shower for my son. I loved the thermometer at first but then I started finding that the thermometer would give different reading just seconds apart. I was not a huge fan and eventually resorted back to the traditional types of thermometers.

Recently, I was chosen by Influenster for the Braun VoxBox.  In this VoxBox, I was given the Braun ThermoScan 5 IRT 6500 to try out and review. What an exciting opportunity, especially since cold and flu season is just around the corner.

Why Ear Thermometer Readings?

Within the first few pages of the owner’s manual, Braun addresses why ear thermometer reading are more accurate than other types of thermometers.  Braun reports that the temperature acquired within the ear is the most accurate reading due to the eardrum sharing blood supply with the temperature control center of the brain.  As a result, body temperature changes are indicated quicker in the ear than other areas of the body (Braun ThermoScan 5 manual 6500, p. 5).  

First Impressions

When I first opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised.  The contents of the box include the Braun ThermoScan owner’s manual, Braun ThermoScan 5 Ear thermometer, plastic case with lens filter storage, 21 disposable lens filters, and 2 AA batteries. You know a company is serious about the quality of their product if they include the batteries!

Braun ThermoScan 5 IRT 6500 Features

My opinion of ear thermometers has changed since using the Braun ThermoScan 5. Braun has created a distinctive positioning system that uses a visual and audible (light and beep) to verify correct positioning. No more erroneous results.  The elite pre-warmed tip technology was created to decrease the cooling of the thermometer tip while inside the ear canal. This helps to ensure accurate and repeatable readings time and again. Plus, it can store up to eight readings. You will never have to worry about forgetting what your child’s last temperature reading was. What a bonus!

This fast, gentle, and easy-to-use thermometer is recommended for infants, children, and adults. It also includes a three-year limited warranty.

How to Use

1. Put a filter over the tip.
2. Press the lower white button to turn on the thermometer.
3. Put the tip in your child’s ear.
4. Press the large button on the thermometer to take the temperature. The green light will flash a few times to ensure that the thermometer is positioned correctly. A beep is heard when the thermometer has a reading. If the thermometer does not flash, try repositioning the tip and try again.

Final Thoughts

Overall I think that the Braun ThermoScan 5 is remarkably user-friendly and presents immediate and precise readings that only a parent can appreciate. It’s so easy, even a toddler can use it. Braun ThermoScan thermometers the #1 brand among doctors and moms. They unquestionably emphasize their superiority within the digital thermometer market. I will be buying this ear thermometer in the future for myself and for baby shower gifts.
