As many of you know, I’ve accepted the challenge of participating in AVON 39: The Walk to End Breast Cancer. Since committing to this endurance event, I have really buckled down on my training. As a novice athlete, I’ve been hitting the pavement daily and have logged over 162 training miles in nine short weeks!
Training for such a long distance is not easy, but every step, blister, and sore muscle propels me towards the finish line of completing 39.3 miles in 2 days. But, to fulfill this challenge strong and healthy, I need to keep up with my training schedule (Read about my training HERE). I have limited time to rest for every sore muscle or joint that inevitably comes with this much walking.
A couple of weeks ago I sustained a calf injury that is still giving me the blues. My typical week includes a couple of 3-mile days, a couple of cross training days, and a couple of endurance (long walk) days. My endurance walks this week were 12 miles and 6 miles. Next week they will be 14 miles and 7 miles. With my tight, ever-increasing training schedule, I can’t afford to just relax my leg for a day or two. So, this week I have been doing a little self-care with some great pain relieving cream from Biofreeze®.
What is Biofreeze®?
I am not a stranger to Biofreeze® Pain Reliever products. I have used it for years to treat aches and pains in physical therapy patients. The fast-acting penetrating cooling temporarily relieves minor aches and pains associated with backaches, arthritis, sore muscles, sore joints, strains, sprains, and bruises.
Biofreeze® is a safe and effective pain-relieving alternative as is as efficient as ice for treating pain. All products are non-systemic, non-narcotic, and contain no NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), salicylates, or addictive substances.
Produced in the United States, Biofreeze® products include United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade menthol to provide fast acting pain relief. Products are available in roll-on, spray, and gel formats in both signature green and colorless (dye-free). Biofreeze® is never tested on animals, and contain no parabens and propylene glycol.
How I Use Biofreeze®
With 11 weeks to go before the event, I have been using the Biofreeze® gel and spray to help decrease my calf pain and treat my low back pain that crept up on me this weekend. I know these aches and pains will not be the first or the last that I get during my training so, that’s why I have to be prepared.
These handy on-the-go products are the perfect size to fit into my hydration pack to take with me on my long endurance training walks to use them at the first twinge of soreness. I’ll also be carrying the roll-on product with me on my upcoming walking half marathon this Saturday.
Onwards and upwards one step at a time!
