As parents, we all know it’s so important to teach our kids healthy habits to carry throughout their lives. From staying active to eating a balanced diet, these habits help kids maintain healthy and active lives. CLIF Kid® is dedicated to reclaiming play. They’re encouraging girls and boys to get outside, push their boundaries, and feed their adventures. Growing kids need a diverse and healthy diet to get a wide-range of nutrients to feed their fun. Here’s some tips I use to keep my kids healthy and energized during play.
Health muscles. Protein is essential for building muscle in growing kids. While protein is in all meats, choose the best low-fat protein sources for your kids. The best proteins come from lean meats, fish, poultry, eggs, and other non-meat sources like beans, nuts, and seeds.
Energy foods. Carbohydrates provide fuel for kid’s bodies. Processed carbs like those found in white bread, rice, or sugar aren’t nutritionally complete. The best carb sources for giving growing kids the energy for healthy play includes brown rice and whole grain breads, cereals, and pastas.
Healthy fats. Growing kids need fats to stay healthy, too. Healthy fats provide nutrients for growth and energy, absorption and metabolism of some vitamins and minerals, and are important for the growing brains. Healthy fat-containing foods include olive oil, fish oil, seeds, nuts, avocados, and milk.
Eat the rainbow. A diet full of fruits and vegetables helps guarantee kids are getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals, and fiber to help their growing bodies. Choose colorful veggies and fruit like spinach, peppers, squash, carrots, blueberries, strawberries, bananas, citrus fruits, and other grown foods that help keep kids healthy.
Limit high-fat and high-sugar. Some foods marketed directly to kids on television and in stores are loaded with fat and sugar. These products are usually associated with cartoon characters, free toys, and come in bright packages.
Drink up. When kids play, they play hard. Give them the right beverages to replace fluids lost during play and during the day to ensure proper hydration. Water and low or no calorie drinks are the best for growing kids.
Catch some rays. Vitamin D nutrient needed for calcium absorption and healthy bones. Kids get lots of vitamin D by playing outside in the sunlight. Kids can also get vitamin D from fatty fish (like tuna and salmon), some dairy products, and egg yolks.
Snack healthy. These days family and kids schedules are busy and often this means snacking on-the-go. But being short on time doesn’t mean being short on nutrition. CLIF Kid Zbar® are a great on-the-go snack option or as a part of a balanced meal.
