I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. If you have ever been to St. Louis you know that we have some pretty awesome (or odd as seen by some non-natives) delicacies. Some of the most notable are Toasted ravioli, the prosperity sandwich, pork steaks, provel cheese, and gooey butter cake.
If you have never tasted gooey butter cake you have not lived. Gooey butter cake was created in St. Louis in the 1930s when a baker, mixed up a regular cake butter frosting with a deep butter smear creating this gooey goodness.
Gooey butter cake is always sold as a square cake with powdered sugar lightly sprinkled on top. It is enjoyed more as a coffee cake than a traditional cake.
For this holiday season at work this year, we are each bringing in treats to share with the other coworkers. Being that I now reside and work in Chicagoland, I miss my hometown delicacies. I decided it would be a wonderful treat to bring my coworkers a gooey butter cake.
From past experience, non natives adore the unusual greatness of the gooey butter cake. I had planned to purchase one from a St.Louis bakery when I was in town for Thanksgiving but as it always happens with quick trips to St. Louis, I ran out of time and completely forgot about it until we were 200 miles outside of St.Louis.
But as luck would have it, I had in my possession my late grandmothers gooey butter cake recipe amongst my prized recipe stash. I hope that you enjoy this recipe as much as I do.

LOL you are funny. I have not lived and don’t think I will ever live, since I am vegan and don’t consume most of the ingredients. However, I enjoy your posts and your humor keeps us engaged and coming back. Great job!

That’s right! lol
Butter is sexy! I like the sounds of this recipe. I’ve been cooking with cream cheese a lot recently. We keep it stocked in the fridge so we can make sushi conveniently. We keep the avocados stocked too. Then, we add smoked salmon from Sam’s Club or any other left over meat. Getting hungry now…
