Avon 39 training journalHi, all! Welcome to another week of my Avon 39 Training Diary. This week was much easier than the previous weeks, for sure. I ramped down in preparation for next weeks 20 miles and 10 miles respectably. This is something I am trying to wrap my mind around, even as we gear up for Memorial Day.

This week I was able to stay closer to home with my walks as I can easily complete up to 12 miles in the neighborhood. On Wednesday, during my walk, I had the greatest opportunity. I was able to speak to my best friend—who lives in Missouri— the ENTIRE 8-mile walk. This was such a blessing. I had been feeling kind of low and inside my head a lot lately with all the training.

I had not spoken to her much since she came out to visit last October. So, it was good to hear her voice and talk to her about my two new found loves—the ketogenic diet and training for the Avon 39. I still cannot believe I was able to bend her ear for so long. But, when it has been so long, we have a lot to talk about.

It was also good to gauge how my fitness is going with the “talk test.” The talk test is an easy way to measure exercise intensity. Generally, if you’re doing a modest-intensity activity, you can talk during the activity. If you’re doing a strong-intensity activity, you won’t be able to say more than a couple of words without pausing for a breath. On flat land, it was relatively easy to speak without getting out of breath (but I wouldn’t be able to sing nor would you want me too…haha). But the hills, those Northern California HILLS, are what really tested me. A couple of times I had to tell her to hold on while I climbed a hill as I was not going to be able to talk at all. Overall, speaking to her really helped to make the time fly by.

I also had the chance to try out some hot yoga this week. The intro class I tried last week was nothing compared to the Hot Yoga Fusion class I tried this week. This class was 100 degrees with 40% humidity. The heat and humidity really helps me to get into the poses and get a good stretch. The only thing I dislike about this class is how much I sweat. I sweat a lot normally but sweating while trying to relax can be distracting. I can’t wait to try it again next week!!

I am still collecting donations for my Avon 39. I am almost to the “finish line” with training. Let the countdown begin! I am almost (on Tuesday) officially 39 days away from walking in AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer San Francisco. A donation of $39 or more in support of my walk will help me get one step closer to helping to fund necessary programs for breast cancer patients in my local community. Please donate today: [http://bndfr.com/62np5]. Thank you in advance.

I hope that you have a great Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day has always been a very sacred day for me. After serving six years in the USAF, I truly understand the ultimate sacrifice that these men and women made to protect our freedoms.  So, whatever you have planned this Memorial Day, make sure you enjoy it to the fullest because we are free. But also take a moment to raise up your cup and honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. God Bless!
